Exterior Castle Set - Created in Johnny Robinson's Miniature Sets and Props Workshop, Fall 2004 at Rochester Institute of Technology School of Film and Animation
Although the Exterior Castle only has a small part on-screen in Glarg and Fritz, it was integral for creating the exterior world of the film. The set was not built for any particular film, but as a class project in the fall of 2004, the same academic quarter that I took the Character Design Workshop in which I designed Glarg and Fritz, the combination helped influence the idea of the characters. Originally I was going to use this set for all of Glarg and Fritz but the interiors didn't offer enough room, so we built our own interior set, almost as big as this whole exterior. But this was a fun class project, we learned a lot. Design started with a cardboard mockup, then wooden frame, then hi-density foam pieces, including a foam tower lathed on a potter's wheel, press-molded sculptamold stone panels, which often required individual stones to be carved at the edges, and then paint and weathering applied to the dried stones. The set does have removable walls for interior shots, and was used in at least a couple of different student shorts as part of the Intro to Stop Motion Animation class. --Joey
